HOPE VALLEY

Hope Valley is Durham’s first suburban country club community. In the 1920’s, golf course designer, Donald Ross and the developer Mebane Company formed a partnership to build an 18 hole championship golf course and convert the surrounding farm land into suburban home sites and streets. It attracted scores of professionals from the healthcare, tobacco, and tile industries, and their families; many became lifelong residents.

Over time, the maturing oaks, hickories, and pines have only enhanced the beauty of the neighborhood. Today, Hope Valley has maintained itself as a traditional, family-oriented country club neighborhood. Properties are beautiful revival styles including Tudor, English Cottage, Colonial, Norman Provincial, and Spanish. The classic Hope Valley historic home prices range up to several million dollars, depending upon the lot size, proximity to the golf course, and the level of restoration. Land is scarce in this area, leading to a number of “tear-downs” in recent years, or the renovation and expansion of homes built in the last half of the last century.

The historic Norman Provincial style Hope Valley Clubhouse was originally designed by Milburn and Heister. Presently, the clubhouse has been restored and is host to an abundance of recreational facilities comprised of the golf course, tennis club, swim club, and dining facilities. The club caters to families, professionals and retirees. Adult and Junior Golf and Tennis programs, camps, and competitive interclub tournaments are thriving. There are plenty of popular summer camps, swim team meets, fitness and wellness programs, and social events for everyone.
